Thought I would get this thread started. Add to the list as you think of other cars and how you feel about them if you wish.
Ford XR5 Turbo - Great little car, looks great, exellent platform, handles great, nice torquey inline 5 with an engine note thats just mmm.
Mazda3 MPS - Not out yet, but will surely be up their on the list of the best hot hatches. Style isnt as agressive as other cars in this class but still very nice looking. Shares platform with the Focus so hopefully they do a good job of tuning and containing all that TQ steer from the torquey 2.3 litre turbo. It is a pearler in the Mazda6MPS and can only persume it will be great also in the 3. Mazda claim the quickest FWD hot hatch, we'll see...
VW Golf GTI - Again, an awesome little car. Smooth engine, handles well. Has option of DSG transmission which is a nice option for some, but myself still prefer the manual. Can get very pricey with options...
Mini Cooper S - Getting on in age now. Not really a match for any of the current hot hatches in my opinion. New one is on the way so we'll see then.
Upcoming and rumoured cars.
Next Gen Impreza WRX - Rumoured to be a hatch for the next gen being smaller and lighter. Price might be a little more, but you do get AWD. We'll see when it comes...
Ford Focus RS (possibly badged as FPV) - 224kw and AWD. Some say it isn't coming, others say it is. There has been spy pictures of it testing. It could very well be priced way too high to be competition. More then likely will end up competition for the EVO and STi

A couple more...
Holden Astra Turbo - VXR's little brother, not as powerful, but cheaper. Could be abit of a bargain
Honda Civic Type R - Coming soon and should have razor sharp handling.

yeah sorry i should have said power competition GTi is quick of the mark with the auto gearbox but slows down with only 147odd kw the R32 is too heavy and price is too damn much (would rather an EVO or STI with that kinda money) havent heard much about the F1 megane... is it the same as the turbo megane we have here now ?

I agree about the R32. It's a very nice car but for an extra $20k, it's a bit pricey.
Also don't know too much about the Megane F1. The megane's just don't look right to me.
